I’m not the first veterinary oncologist whose own pet gets cancer. ❤️🩹 But I will tell you this, it changes you, and I understand it differently now. As a doctor, I know the stats, the options, survival times, and prognostic factors. As a pet parent, I feel every decision in my chest and my heart. When it’s your own dog, you stop thinking in protocols and start thinking in moments. I notice everything. Especially the week after chemo, she’ll take a bite, drop it on the floor next t

A few weeks ago, Penelope’s breathing sounded… off. We brought her to work, thinking she might have laryngeal paralysis, but her laryngeal exam was normal, so we took chest x-rays, then moved on to a CT scan. The images showed a large mass in her right middle lung lobe and severely enlarged hilar lymph nodes in her chest. Those lymph nodes are compressing her bronchus, causing the noise that sounded off and making it hard for her to breathe at times. It is beyond heartbreaking to watch her

I can’t stop thinking about what I could have done differently… 💔 Even as a veterinary oncologist, when it’s your own dog, the questions don’t stop. Could I have caught it sooner? Did I miss something? Was I paying close enough attention? Should I have run that test earlier? 🔹 If you’re feeling this right now, please hear me: you are not alone, and guilt is not part of the treatment plan. Cancer is complex. It plays by its own rules. Some tumors grow quietly. Some don’t read the

Breaking bad news never gets "easy," but we can get better at it. 💙 As veterinary professionals, telling a family that their beloved pet has cancer is one of the most emotionally demanding parts of our work. After thousands of these conversations, I’ve learned that how we say it is more important than what we say. Here are a few techniques that have truly helped me over the years: 1️⃣) Let them get ready for the news. To lessen the shock, it helps to warn that bad news is coming. When

One day, you might find yourself facing decisions you never expected… like I am right now. ❤️🩹 A lump you didn’t notice last month. A diagnosis you weren’t prepared to hear. Treatment plans, biopsies, quality-of-life talks, and it can happen in an instant... I know because that’s what happens to my clients, and just recently happened to me. It can be overwhelming, and it’s emotional. But here’s what I want you to know: Cancer in dogs is common, but it’s not always a death

“They need surgery.” 🩺 That’s what most pet parents hear after a mast cell tumor diagnosis. But what if surgery isn’t ideal or even possible for your dog? Things like tumor location, margins, and patient history can all factor into surgery not being a viable option. And while surgery has long been the go-to for mast cell tumors, it’s no longer the only option. Enter: STELFONTA® 💉 This drug is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment for canine MCTs that’s been helping dogs around t

What makes me different from other veterinary cancer specialists? 🥼🩺 I’d say it comes down to how I show up for my patients, my colleagues, and for you. ✔️ I co-authored The Dog Cancer Survival Guide to help pet parents feel informed, not overwhelmed. ✔️ I serve on advisory boards to help shape the future of veterinary oncology. ✔️ I speak nationally and internationally to educate fellow veterinary professionals. ✔️ I still see patients part-time because staying in the clinic keeps me

Let me explain... 👇 1) Waiting and watching isn't always the right move. That ‘harmless lump’ may not be benign. When we wait too long to aspirate, it costs the pet's time and options. 2) You don’t need to feel guilty for not pursuing every treatment option. Guilt should not drive decision-making. Only informed, compassionate choices should. 3) We unfortunately don’t talk enough about quality of life until we’re already losing it. This is a reminder that QOL conversations should

Let’s talk about chemotherapy-induced diarrhea in dogs and why I’m no longer reaching for metronidazole. 💊 As a veterinary oncologist for 20 years, I’ve seen and know just how frustrating GI side effects can be for both pets and their people. (IYKYK) When I discovered Canalevia®-CA1, an FDA-approved antisecretory drug specifically designed for chemotherapy-induced diarrhea in dogs, it quickly became a staple in my practice. 🌿 It’s plant-based (sourced from the Croton lechleri tree sap

It’s called Avmaquin™, and this oncologist is definitely a fan! Why? Because not all supplements are created equal, and when I find one that I truly love with a solid scientific backing, I will always shout it from the rooftops. I was amazed when I learned about the benefits of sulforaphane for our dogs. Even more so when I discovered an easy-to-administer supplement to help our pets reap the benefits. That’s where Avmaquin™ comes in, a sulforaphane-producing supplement formulated by @n

Where are your dog's lymph nodes? 👀 When a patient comes in, and we're talking about lymphoma, or if they've happened to relapse from lymphoma, I get asked, "Where are my dog's lymph nodes?" 🐶 So, I wanted to make this reel to show you where they are! Dogs' lymph nodes can be found in four areas. Keep watching to learn where to find them. Did you know where these were? 😂 | Dr Sue Cancer Vet

It’s been a month since I spoke at the @aahahealthypet Conference in Chicago, and I’m still buzzing from the conversations! 🗣️ A highlight was previewing the 2026 AAHA Oncology Guidelines for Dogs and Cats for attendees, which will be published in early 2026. The last guidelines were published 10 years ago. As one of the authors and part of the task force, I was honored to preview them, given the significant changes that have occurred over the last decade. These guidelines are meant to h

Curious about WHY I'm obsessed with sulforaphane? 👀 It's because sulforaphane is a type of antioxidant that behaves like the body’s internal defense team, neutralizing cancer-causing free radicals, which ultimately helps to prevent cell damage, and can contribute to reducing overall cancer risk, while aiding in our pets' overall wellness. It's Science 👏🏼 Backed 👏🏼 Facts 👏🏼 When I learned about Avmaquin™, a sulforaphane-producing supplement formulated by @nutramax_labs, I couldn't

I've been scolded online for smiling, sounding happy, and having my nails done in my videos. You name it, someone has bullied me for it. I know that by putting myself out here, you're subject to getting all kinds of responses, especially in the field of pet cancer. Though still, I'll be honest, I never thought I'd be subject to the amount of online bullying that I have, simply by doing something that I love so much. There was a time when the hurtful comments, DMs, and emails deeply af

Stay strong out there. You know what’s coming; remember this time too shall pass. 💪🏻🫡 P.S. Pet parents, please remember to keep candles and low-hanging decorations out of your pets’ reach. It’s also important to be extra cautious about picking up small toys and wrappings so curious pups don’t encounter choking hazards or gastrointestinal foreign bodies. Finally, please familiarize yourself with the toxic food list so holiday table scraps don’t lead to an emergency room visit. Cheers
